education is Power!

For 2023 our newest project is the School Education Program, generously sponsored by The Kilifi Gold Triathlon.

In snakebite endemic regions like Kilifi County, where knowledge on how to prevent, respond to, and coexist with snakes is lacking, this power can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why this program is so important. We believe that small changes in behaviour can go a long way to helping people live in harmony with snakes and protect themselves from harm. Our approach to snakebite prevention and education is three-fold:

First, we provide children with the knowledge they need to identify and understand the types of snakes they may encounter in their environment. This includes teaching them about the signs to look for, their habitats and behaviors, and the dangers they may present.

Second, we teach children about the measures they can take to protect themselves from snakebites. This includes educating them about the importance of wearing protective clothing and footwear, avoiding areas with dense foliage, and remaining vigilant when outdoors.

Finally, we provide information on how to respond in the event of a snakebite. This includes teaching children about the different types of venom and how to recognise the symptoms of a snakebite, so they can seek medical attention as quickly as possible. We believe that small changes in behaviour can make a huge difference when it comes to preventing snakebites and living safely alongside snakes. By educating children on the power of knowledge, we can help them to protect themselves and their communities from harm.

We have been busy creating a few educational tools of our own to keep this education visual, fun and engaging – as well as using the amazing videos created by GSI USA Foundation (can be downloaded in Lo Res) available in English and Swahili, please share widely – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwa_cSZSqJo
